Lula’s B&B

Who will be you host?

My name is Lourdes („Lula”). I am a real Arequipeña, born in Santa Isabel de Siguas, some 80 kilometres north of the city and raised later in the town of Arequipa.
Since the mid eighties, I have lived, together with my Swiss husband, in various countries of the Americas (Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti, Dominican Republic) as well as in Switzerland. In 2002 we moved back to Arequipa.

Language-wise, non-Spanish speakers will not have a problem with me: I am fluent in German, French and English.

My main job is teaching (Spanish) and running a small Spanish Language Academy (EDEAQ), located in a listed colonial building one block from the main square („Plaza de Armas”) in Arequipa. My school is certified by the Peruvian Ministry of Education, and the intensive courses are recognised as Bildungsurlaub („educational leave of absence”) in a series of states in Germany. We (i.e. my school) are members of the Arequipa Chamber of Commerce as well as of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of Arequipa. – Please refer to: www.edeaq.com

In your first mail (French or German written is ok too), entering your reservation request, please let us know when (date and approximate time of arrival) you will arrive in Arequipa and how many days you plan to stay. And do not forget to give your full name (first name and family name) and to indicate the number of people you are travelling with. You will get a feedback by e-mail within 36 hours. - Arequipa and its surroundings are beautiful and interesting must-see tourist attractions; so plan enough time to spend here.

I am looking forward to saying hello to you in Arequipa in the not-too-distant future.

Where exactly in Arequipa do we live?

We live on the top floor of a modern building on a small hill („Cerro San Jacinto”) in the Cayma area in Arequipa. This is a very quiet neighbourhood; the air quality is excellent and we enjoy splendid views, also from our roof terrace: southwards to the city of Arequipa, northwards to the Andes (Chachani, Misti).

The view from there - as well as from the living/dining room downstairs - is just fantastic.

Your bedroom is quite spacious, with a lot of light and with two beds (a „French“ one and a standard), and you have your own bathroom (hot water shower/WC). There is a desk where you can read or write or place your laptop, and there is enough space for your belongings in a built-in wardrobe. In the event of cold nights in July and August, we shall put an electric heater in your room, if you so wish. From you room, you enjoy a splendid view overlooking the city of Arequipa.

If not discovering Arequipa and its surroundings, you can of course stay in the large living/dining room as well as in the small living room, where you will find Cable-TV (including BBC, CNN in English and Spanish, Deutsche Welle, Télévision Française, RAI, Televisión Española, Peruvian and other Latin American Channels, Movie Channels, Sports Channels, etc.) and a lot of books (including dictionaries, etc.). We also maintain quite an impressive collection of CDs and cassettes with Latin American music as well as of the classical repertoire (Mozart in particular). We have two computers - meaning that you have free access to the Internet.

Enjoy some additional pictures: the view towards the Misti from the „Mirador de Cayma,” (a viewpoint approximately 150 m from our house); a typical alley near the Plaza Yanahuara, and Arequipa’s main square („Plaza de Armas”).
The “Penthouse:” On the upper floor, a recently refurbished “penthouse,” which includes one major bedroom (“French”/double bed), one small bedroom (standard bed) and a private bathroom, is available.

Commuting to and from the city centre
Commuting to and from the city centre is easy, since we live pretty near downtown: public transport (there is a stop 50 m from our house) approx. 10 to 15 min. (approx. 25 cents of a USD); by taxi 5 to 8 min. (between USD 0.90 and 1.10). – The Plaza de Cayma as well as the Plaza de Yanahuara are within walking distance (5 to 10 min.).

Travellers with children

Travellers with children are welcome.

Excursions and sports

As your tenants, we shall, of course, assist you in your travel undertakings in and around Arequipa. Two of the world's greatest natural wonders are found in the Arequipa region: the Colca Canyon and the Cotahuasi Canyon. – Colca Canyon: we shall help you to get you a suitable package in terms of schedule and price and will inform you about possible special offers. – Cotahuasi Canyon: we shall provide advise how you can organise a trip on your own to the deepest canyon in the world (3354 metres).

We can also provide you with non-expensive short-term memberships in the well-equipped “Club Internacional de Arequipa,” a first-class establishment within walking distance both from our house and from downtown (facilities include swimming/use of pools, tennis, gymnasium/aerobics, soccer, track and field, etc.).

P.S.

Those who would like to know more about Arequipa (history, architecture, sights, leisure and sports, excursions, typical cuisine, etc.) are welcome to open „City, Leisure and Sports.” More practical information relating to Peru as such (flights, climate, money change, etc.) is provided through „Hints And How To Get There.” And those who are looking for a good introduction into Peruvian history, politics and relevant sociological and societal aspects will find comprehensive information (“Country and People”) that my Swiss husband (he is a University of Zurich trained sociologist) has written and compiled. Please note that the three mentioned links have been elaborated for my Language Academy (EDEAQ) – so do not be confused when you read in some rare occasions about students, just replace the word “student” through “guest!”
